We all enjoyed Fran's lively banter with her puppets, Kukla the Clown, and Ollie the Alligator, but we really loved the short films Fran would show, usually with an international flavour. As I recall, the favourite of young boys was the series of Fatty and Skinny comedies, about two aptly-named Japanese boys. Frank played piano in a jazz band called the Firehouse Five, and Ollie was a model train enthusiast. The most revealing scenes in the film offer glimpses into the creative process, which for both men involved not only drawing characters but also acting out everything they did, mugging into the mirror, gesticulating and translating that body language directly into their drawings.

Fran is definitely speaking to children, in an almost educational way, something that rarely happened on Kukla, Fran and Ollie. Perhaps that's why I was never a big fan of KFO until I saw the original series. The thing about Kukla, Fran and Ollie that makes them so special, though, is that what Burr Tillstrom did is create a little world where all the characters interact intricately with one another, a world that exists on its own terms separate from the reality around them, where there's so much affection between all the characters, but still has it's fair-share of lunacy and snarkiness. Frank and Ollie are minor characters in Tiny Toon Adventures.
